Current Sports Volunteering Opportunities
• Saturday Sports Club – Trampolining, climbing, dance, multi-sport and more for disabled young people. Saturday mornings from 10am-12pm, at UniSPORT. A fantastic opportunity to work with disabled children and offer them the chance to relax and play in a safe environment.
• FISH (Fun in the School Holidays) – Monday 6th April – Thursday 9th April. A Guildford Borough run activity scheme for children aged between 10-16 years old. A number of different activities are involved and the children choose which they wish to take part in. Activities include: Trampolining, rugby, climbing, hockey, multi-sports, dance and many others.
• SportStart UK – After school clubs run for 4-11 year olds. Sports covered include Tag-rugby, Tri-golf and athletics. Coaches will need to be over the age of 18 and preferably have a car as clubs are spread out over the Guildford, Woking and Epsom areas etc (however this is not a requirement). Applicants don’t need any qualifications but any previous experience of sport or working with children is an advantage.
• Surrey Youth Games – Volunteers and coaches need to help out with this event over the weekend of 20th-21st June 2009. Sports include; hockey, squash, rugby, swimming and more. Coaches also needed during the 10 weeks leading up to the event (not full time) to help coach the teams. Individuals will need to be CRB checked.
• Sport for All Day – A Guildford Borough initiative, where the Guildford Spectrum open the doors for free for one day, to encourage disabled children and their siblings and parents to take part in a variety of different sporting activities. The facilities are, of course, available to everyone to use free of charge. Volunteers are needed to help supervise activities and ensure the day runs smoothly and safely.
• Link Leisure – The sports group is held at Winston Churchill School in St Johns on a Thursday from 7pm to 9pm. It would be nice for the volunteers to join in with the group games and give any fresh ideas to the group. They will need to take direction from the group leader if need be and help the members with any skills if they require it.
The group’s ability ranges from very competitive and confident to quiet and shy so we are looking for people who can involve the whole group but like a challenge.
Link Leisure as a charity run all ranges of sports and social activities for people with learning disabilities from the age of 4 to 70, the people at the sports group are 18+.

Sport Guildford Awards – Every year, the borough council puts on an awards evening, hosted by the University, to recognise the efforts and achievements of sports people and teams in the Guildford Borough. The evening is also an opportunity to celebrate and recognise the work of Volunteers over the year, and awards are presented to those Volunteers that have made a significant effort and contribution to helping Sport. It is also an excellent opportunity for you to meet with other Volunteers and organisations from the area and see where else you can offer your Volunteering services.

You are, of course, more than welcome to source your own projects and placements that better suit your timetable, and what you wish to achieve. If this is the case then do get in contact to let us know as we will be more than happy to support you in your search, and may be able to offer funding to support you and point you in the direction of some good points of contact.

Kenya Sports Development Expedition 2009

Ever fancied volunteering in a different country?

Well this could be your chance as we are linking up with other universities from the South East to provide a once in a lifetime volunteering adventure to Kenya and Tanzania.

A colleague from Bournemouth University will be doing a presentation on 20th November at 6.30pm in the Griffiths Lecture Theatre. Here you will be able to find out what the adventure involves, previous experiences from those that have gone before and how you can get involved.
